Phantom Of The Opera - Live Phantom A Hit In U.K. Theaters
A single screening of the live The Phantom of the Opera 25th Anniversary Concert , broadcast from the Royal Albert Hall in London took in $850,000 at 255 theaters in the U.K. on Sunday. That single screening grossed more than all but two movies screened in the U.K. over the entire weekend, Britain's Guardian newspaper observed.
NCM Fathom and Omniverse Vision, which distributed the live production, have not yet disclosed how much it earned in other countries, including the U.S. (Given the time-zone difference, it aired as matinee fare in North America.) Oddly, the production was not reviewed by a single major theater or movie critic in the U.S., despite the fact that it featured over 200 cast members and musicians, many of whom had been prominent members of past stage productions of the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical.
An HDTV recording of the production will be shown in theaters tonight (Wednesday), tomorrow and next Tuesday at 7 30 p.m. in all locations. More information is available at http //www.fathomevents.com/performingarts/series/phantomoftheopera.aspx.
